REMOURBAN presents its...
A few months from now REMOURBAN will come to an end. As a farewell to its readers, the project released a brochure on its achievements and legacy Five years have almost passed from that morning in January 2015 when REMOURBAN started taking its first steps in the smart renovation of the cities of Nottingham (UK), Tepebaşi (Turkey) and Valladolid (Spain). To celebrate the end of the project and its many success stories, REMOURBAN Partners joined forces to sum up in a few pages the actions that made the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens in Europe more comfortable and sustainable. REMOURBAN final brochure presents the impacts generated by the project in three main areas: low energy district, sustainable mobility and integrated infrastructure. Special attention is paid to the replication of REMOURBAN’s solutions beyond the project duration. Learn more on Tepebaşi’s smart street lighting system and find out how much of the energy consumed in Valladolid’s demo site comes from renewable sources. Did you know that Nottingham’s electric bus fleet is the largest in Europe? And what will the cities of Seraing (Belgium) and Miskolc (Hungary) do to keep REMOURBAN alive in the years to come? Nottingham ready to beat...
As Theresa May signs into law a commitment to bring the UK’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, one city in the UK is on its way to achieving this goal 22 years sooner As one of her final acts as Prime Minister, Theresa May , announced that she will be signing into law a pledge to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 . This would make Britain the first member of the G7 to make such a commitment official. The announcement was largely applauded by environmental groups but there was also criticism of how the target will be met and whether it is in fact feasible. However, one city in the UK is making strides to be net zero all on their own 22 years earlier. Nottingham , located 200 km north of London, has been on the forefront of reducing carbon emissions since 2000 when it signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change . Since then they have been ahead of schedule in meeting the 2020 targets set out in the Kyoto protocol back in 2005 and they have already surpassed their own 2020 Energy Strategy targets of a 26% reduction in carbon emissions having reduced emissions by 39%. Now, spurred on in part by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2018 report , Nottingham City Council has pledged to be net zero by 2028 . To meet such lofty goals the city has invested in one of the UK’s largest electric bus fleets , expanded their tram network, runs many services on renewable sources, improved cycling facilities and installed solar panels on over 4500 domestic properties. An interesting feature of Nottingham’s strategy though has been retaining control of key assets, such as heat networks and transport systems , along with a desire to build in-house ability. “There has been a policy of trying to push things forward and retain municipal control,” says Jonathan Ward, Principal Energy Policy Officer with Nottingham City Council. By taking this approach, the city has been able to provide energy and heat to its citizens in a responsible and affordable way through initiatives like the creation of Robin Hood Energy . This not-for-profit company is owned by city council and aims to distribute low cost energy and address fuel poverty . As of 2018, 100% of the electricity they provide is renewable. The council also owns a heat network that supplies heat to business and residents along with smart meter functions. Ward explains that in council, “there’s been an ethos of making sure these measures are a just transition as well.” This, “just transition” is another key feature of Nottingham’s climate change strategy. “It shouldn’t be a message of less,” believes Ward, “rather how do we do things differently and improve other things at the same time.” To this aim they are involved in several building refurbishment projects aimed directly at improving citizens quality of life, many of which are funded in part by the European project Remourban . As part of this venture, the council was able to roll out the ultra low-energy home pilot program based on the sustainable Energiesprong concept. This method can retrofit and refurbish flats using prefabricated components in a few days with a 30-year warranty. Once completed these homes are energy efficient, net zero residences that use renewable energy created from the structure. The Nottingham Energiesprong scheme entails renovations to 150 homes and is focused on some of the older houses which are currently difficult to heat and will lift these residents out of fuel poverty. Despite all these initiatives and success stories, there is only some much local authorities can do to address this global problem, and so Nottingham welcomes the commitment made at the national level . “Cities have been setting ambitious targets for some time,” says Ward, “but it is great when you got the international and national targets driving things.” He believes the 2050 target is beneficial because it will provide a country wide framework for everyone to plan and work around. By raising the national minimum requirements and adding stronger weights to sustainability, considerations alongside economic and housing targets local planners should be able to do more. The pledge will also help address things outside of local control, such as the countries energy grid, the evolution of industry and the electrification of transport. By Bradley van Paridon

Webinar - The Integrated...
Thursday 19th of June, 2019 at 14:00h (CEST / UTC+2) Over the past few years a new trend has been spreading in Europe. The concept of smart cities has gained momentum in connection with the sustainable development of urban areas and, hence, the life quality of their inhabitants. By means of using digital technologies as a vector to increase the efficiency of a large number of urban functions and services, several solutions are being developed and tested in the fields of Energy Efficiency, Mobility and ICT. The REMOURBAN Project tackles those three areas in its demonstration sites, where energy efficiency in buildings, transport decarbonisation and the development of digital platforms are being put to the test. To do that in a systematic way, the Urban Regeneration Model for European cities (URM) has been developed as a methodology to help cities make the best mix of innovative technical and non-technical solutions to accelerate their transformation into smart and more sustainable cities. An insight into the URM and how it can bring European cities forward will be presented to the audience. Next, the city of Valladolid (Spain) will be presented as a case study. Representatives of the Municipality of Valladolid (Spain), a city leader in the field of electric mobility and energy efficiency, will illustrate how the development of its Sustainable Urban Development Strategy was shaped by the URM. Finally, the webinar will shed light into how and why the URM could also be used by other cities interested in undergoing similar urban development paths as Valladolid. This webinar is part of a series of six webinars organised by the REMOURBAN project. It will be held in English and will last approximately 45 minutes. IMPACT>MOBILITY June 24-25, 2019 Amsterdam. City of Amsterdam host to IMPACT>MOBILITY – 50 European Cities Meet to Create the Partnerships & Build the Data Marketplace to Deliver Scalable & Monetisable Mobility as a Service European cities are at a tipping point; with ambitious sustainability goals to hit, they are doubling down on urban mobility. They are looking to drive people outside of private cars and into shared sustainable transportation solutions. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) provides an interesting alternative that meets the demands of the on-demand consumer of the 21st century. However, there is a long way to go before it is fully integrated to public transportation to create the seamless intermodal experience that will drive people out of their own vehicle into shared sustainable mobility solutions. At Impact>Mobility we explore the key topics affecting the future of urban mobility ‘‘By using more advanced systems and data it would be possible to fend off certain vehicles in a dynamic way… this way of managing flows could have a big impact on traffic flows and air quality in cities.’’ - Lizann Tjon, Program Director, Innovation, City of Amsterdam IMPACT>MOBILITY has been carefully designed to examine the business model and platform/data management challenges underpinning MaaS to find a win-win between the commercial imperatives of mobility service providers and the sustainability aims of the public sector. With 50+ European cities attending and 10+ city specific-case studies presented on stage, we bring together 200 of the leading voices, influencers and gatekeepers to European new mobility deployment. SAVE THE DATE: NIGHTTIME...
On September 26, we will be hosting a workshop on smart cities and the nighttime economy in NYC. Please save the date! Updates will follow. Thanks to Hoboken-native Frank Sinatra, New York City is known as the “City That Never Sleeps.” In fact, most modern cities never sleep. Today’s metropolises function as 24-hour economies, offering opportunities for entertainment, transportation, business and shopping from dusk till dawn. Life after dark has become a realm of technological and social innovation that offers billions in yet-untapped economic potential, and smart, data-driven solutions promise an even larger portion of the population will be able to participate. But the 24-hour economy comes at a cost; there are issues surrounding transportation and supply of goods and services, public safety and equal access, uses of space and housing. This workshop will bring international stakeholders from industry, academia, government and the public to discuss how cities should be thinking about nighttime planning and how data, innovative approaches and digital solutions can support the social, cultural and economic activities that occur after dark.
