Cities worldwide face the dual challenge of decarbonization and sustainable urban growth. The disposal of electric vehicle (EV) batteries presents an increasing environmental concern, as retired batteries often retain significant energy storage capacity, but usually end up as e-waste. At the same time, municipalities must reduce energy costs, strengthen grid resilience, and build infrastructure aligned with the principles of the circular economy. Street lighting, as one of the largest energy consumers in cities, represents a crucial opportunity for innovation.
Omniflow developed a solution that reuses second-life batteries from Nissan Leaf electric vehicles in its Smart Lampposts. These Smart Lampposts combine renewable energy sources (solar and wind) with repurposed EV batteries, each providing up to 6 kWh of storage capacity per pole.
Through this approach, the project extends the useful life of EV batteries by 10–15 years, reduces waste, and creates resilient infrastructure capable of operating independently during power outages. The solution also integrates with smart grids via Infrastructure-to-Grid (I2G), enabling the lampposts to store excess renewable energy and feed it back to the grid when needed.
In this pilot stage, citizens were not directly engaged in co-creation workshops or surveys. However, the benefits are citizen-oriented: cleaner energy, lower emissions, and enhanced resilience of public infrastructure. Future large-scale deployments could integrate citizen feedback on placement and services (e.g. WiFi, air quality monitoring).
