Supporting transport in business parks - an example at Munich Airport
Munich,
Germany
(2019)
Scale:
Individual site
Munich airport has 38,000 employees. To provide for their complex mobility needs, they provided 70 company cars for employees to drive around the site. However, while cars were always fully booked, they were under-utilised, spending a lot of time parked and waiting for return journeys.

Challenge / Goal
Fixed-line transit is a challenge for most airports. The employees have to travel between different buildings of the area that are not within walking distance. Additionally, the employee movements are often highly unpredictedable beforehand, so fixed schedules were not efficient enough.
The challenge for Shotl was to find a new way to move employees without raising prices too much.
Solution
We configured a white-label on-demand service called ShuttleMe with three branded minivans and professional drivers. During working hours, airport employees can book a pick-up and drop-off in real-time via the Passenger App from any of the stops covering the entire airport.
This would also prevent that too many people gathered at the same time. Once the trip is completed, the seat of the vehicle and the vehicle itself becomes free. Before that, the employees “blocked” the vehicle until they were done with their meetings and returned to their point of origin.
Citizen participation
Being a private corporation, there was no citizen participation, but rather meetings with relevant staff of the airport, plus visits to the facilities to obtain direct knowledge of the area.
