Challenge / Goal
Many people are afraid that the bus drivers won't see them if they stand inside of the weather protection at the stops. So they stand outside in rain and snow and wind, making it a pretty uncomfortable waiting experience. Smart weather protection is part of making it easier and more comfortable to travel by local buses, especially for people living in the countryside.
In a broader perspective, Helsingborg wants to make it easier for residents who make climate-smart choices - and taking the bus is one thing we would like to promote.
Solution
The smart weather protection works in such a way that the shelter at the bus stop is equipped with a sensor. The sensor can tell if someone is inside of the shelter. When the bus approaches, a green light inside of the shelter will light up if someone is waiting there. Thanks to the green light the bus driver can easily tell that they should stop and pick up new passengers. The travelers can calmly and safely stay inside the weather protection when it is dark and rainy.
Right now, presence sensors are being tested at two different rural stops in Bårslöv. As the tests have been successful, there are plans to scale up and place more presence sensors at other rural stops. It is a pretty easy implementation, as the planning time and implementation takes less than 20 hours in total.
