Challenge / Goal

The Recycle & Win project was initiated to tackle the urgent challenges posed by waste management and the environmental impact of improper waste disposal. With the rising waste generation due to expanding societies and consumerism, the project sought to mitigate issues such as landfill overcapacity, pollution, and resource depletion. The main problems are:

Waste in the Environment: In many communities, a significant portion of waste ends up in landfills or is incinerated, contributing to soil, water, and air pollution. These practices harm the environment and pose health risks to the population.

Low recycling rates: Low recycling rates mean valuable recyclable materials are wasted rather than reused. The lack of public awareness and motivation has further limited recycling program success.

The primary goals included automating the collection of recyclables, increasing recycling rates, reducing landfill waste, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. Ultimately, the project aimed to create a lasting positive environmental impact, securing a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for all.

Solution

The project focuses on combating environmental pollution, worsened by improper waste disposal practices. The project employs a multi-faceted approach to enhance recycling efforts among district residents, involving:

Behaviour Change: Responsible waste management behaviour is encouraged through education and incentivization. This improves recycling rates and ultimately creates a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.
Promoting Awareness: Educating the public on how recycling can mitigate environmental pollution and conserve natural resources to stress the importance of recycling.
Incentive-based Recycling: A system that rewards residents for their recycling activities was introduced. It is based on the amount of waste users submit, which can later be redeemed for various benefits, fostering continued active participation of community members.

A Mobile App further supports streamlining the recycling process by not only simplifying the recycling process but also making it more accessible and efficient for everyone involved. It includes:

Real-time Recycling Feedback: The application offers a comprehensive platform that empowers users to actively engage in recycling initiatives. It allows users to track their individual recycling contributions over time, providing a clear picture of their environmental impact. It includes a feature that enables users to calculate their carbon footprint, offering insights into their overall environmental impact beyond recycling. Additionally, users can request tools like recycling bins to help separate waste effectively.
Recycling Accessibility: To make the recycling process even more convenient, users can view the locations of collection units on the district map, allowing them to easily connect with them and drop off their waste at these points or submit it directly to team members. This functionality ensures that recycling is accessible and tailored to each user's preferences.

Through the combination of mobile software technology, the availability of essential recycling tools, and a reward-driven campaign, the project effectively involves citizens in its mission to promote sustainable waste management.

Citizen participation

Residents play a key role in the project's development by actively participating in the application. After creating a profile, they become integral contributors to the platform's success. The application offers various benefits that stimulate citizen participation in sustainable waste management.
