Challenge / Goal
Escaldes-Engordany is one of 7 parishes (regions) in Andorra, a country in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain. Together with Andorra la Vella, it makes up the urban center of Andorra.
Yet Escaldes-Engordany previously did not have a public bus service, unlike most of the other parishes. Private cars are the primary mode of transport across the country and are thus responsible for a significant proportion of carbon emissions.
The local municipality had long been seeking a more efficient way to improve mobility options for its residents. Their leadership was looking to provide a service that could compete with the convenience of cars, provide a seamless passenger experience, and deliver a reliable and cost-effective service over a geographically complex (mountainous) landscape.
Solution
In June 2021, the local municipality partnered with TRC to launch Bus a la Demanda, a four-vehicle point-to-point on-demand transport service.
Citizen participation
"Our vision is that people who live in areas far from the parish center who do not have their own vehicle, who have mobility problems, or who simply want an agile and on-demand transport system, can have one at their fingertips."
Rosa Gili Casal, Mayor of Escaldes-Engordany
