Overview: The UK Parliament has approved the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate legislation, setting a deadline of 1st January 2024 for carmakers to progressively ramp up electric vehicle (EV) production, aiming to reduce emissions and drive the transition towards greener vehicles.

Key points:

  • ZEV mandate requires auto manufacturers to ensure 22% of cars sold in the UK in 2024 are generate no tailpipe emissions, rising to 33% in 2026, and 52% in 2028.

  • Manufacturers failing to achieve these goals are set to face fines of £15,000 for every car they fall short in their minimum quota, and £18,000 for each van.​​​​​​​

  • Anticipated £39bn boost to the economy, significant fuel cost savings for households.
