Thames Water, the largest water and sewerage company in England, has faced criticism for its poor environmental performance in 2022. According to a report by the Environment Agency, Thames Water had 17 serious sewage pollution incidents last year, the highest number in a decade. These incidents caused serious, extensive, or persistent impact on the environment, people, or property. The report also rated Thames Water as requiring improvement, indicating that it did not meet basic environmental requirements. The Environment Agency chairman said that the company's performance was "simply unacceptable" and that it needed significant investment to solve its deep-rooted problems. Wildlife and Countryside Link, a coalition of environmental groups, also urged the government to impose stronger regulatory changes on the water industry to protect nature and public health.
