The European Commission is calling on cities committed to sustainability to apply for the 2026 European Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards. These awards acknowledge efforts in reducing environmental impact and fostering a greener future. They offer financial support, recognition, and a platform to share initiatives with other cities. The process consists of expert assessment, finalist selection, jury evaluation, and winner announcement by October 2024.

For Small & Medium-sized Cities:

Small and medium-sized cities can apply for the European Green Leaf award, where winning cities can receive up to €200,000 in financial support. This opportunity offers recognition and a chance to lead by example among European cities towards sustainability. Please find the European Green Leaf leaflets in all EU languages here.

Awards Overview:

European Green Capital: reserved for cities over 100,000 inhabitants; the winner receives a substantial €600,000.
European Green Leaf: open to towns/cities with 20,000 to 100,000 inhabitants; winners each stand to gain up to €200,000 in support.

Cities interested in applying should first go to the registration portal and download the requested documents. Subsequently, proceed to the application portal and submit their application.
