Introducing the CIVITAS Initiative:

CIVITAS is a flagship program for the European Commission, aiding in the realization of its mobility and transport goals, aligned with the European Green Deal. It functions as a network of cities, dedicated to sustainable urban mobility, promoting political commitment and expertise through peer exchange, networking, and training.

Since its launch in 2002, CIVITAS has advanced research and innovation in sustainable urban mobility and enabled local authorities to develop, test and roll out measures via a range of projects. A series of ten thematic areas underpin these.

With nearly 70% of EU citizens residing in urban areas, where transport-related greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution have significant impacts, CIVITAS aims to enhance the quality of life and health by supporting cities in achieving smart and sustainable urban mobility, contributing to climate-neutral and resilient cities.

CIVITAS Replication and Deployment programme

The CIVITAS initiative provides support to cities in accessing innovative solutions and addressing their transportation challenges through a series of activities, including twinning sessions, co-creation workshops, and site visits.

During the period spanning 2023 to 2027, CIVITAS will handpick 12 Challenge cities and 24 Champion cities to participate in the program. This program encompasses various take-up and transfer activities such as twinning sessions, co-creation workshops, and site visits. Through the CIVITAS Replication and Deployment program, the 12 Challenge cities will each develop a Deployment Plan, aimed at resolving the specific challenges they initially identified.
