Challenge / Goal

The developers of the tool, dRISK, saw opportunity to use their AI expertise to develop a tool with applications for the public response to the COVID-19 pandemic by measuring the effectiveness of social distancing in real-time. In addition, a goal was to gain insight into how rush hours and normal routines changed during the pandemic. This can support the safe reopening of public spaces and shopping centres.

Solution

Powered by artificial intelligence, the cloud-based social distancing tool determines levels of human density, hour-by-hour changes and hotspots of activity, displaying the results in an easily interpreted form. The tool even recognises couples walking together or adults with children and can differentiate them from others who may be ignoring social distancing rules. The public can use this information to see how busy public places are at any time, as well as gain insights into mobility trends and changes in behaviour since the beginning of the crisis. This will help people observe social distancing as we emerge from the pandemic.

Citizen participation

A live demo was setup on the dRISK webpages for Londoners to use to find the least risky times to travel to the city.
