The developers of the tool, dRISK, saw opportunity to use their AI expertise to develop a tool with applications for the public response to the COVID-19 pandemic by measuring the effectiveness of social distancing in real-time. In addition, a goal was to gain insight into how rush hours and normal routines changed during the pandemic. This can support the safe reopening of public spaces and shopping centres.
Powered by artificial intelligence, the cloud-based social distancing tool determines levels of human density, hour-by-hour changes and hotspots of activity, displaying the results in an easily interpreted form. The tool even recognises couples walking together or adults with children and can differentiate them from others who may be ignoring social distancing rules.
