Challenge / Goal

The Municipality of Odense wanted to enact comprehensive gathering of real-time traffic flow insights across the city. To do so would involve an improvement of traffic data reliability, to enable proactive urban development as well as traffic management.

Previous to the project, various departments lacked valuable insights regarding traffic flows in order to make more informed decisions. This was especially the case with traffic flow impacts related to the new light rail, urban development and building constructions, which previously hadn't been measured at all.


The solution involved the installation of 125 Swarm Outdoor Perception Boxes across intersections, the city center and pedestrian areas (i.e. origin-destination counting, queue length estimations). This allowed for intelligent traffic data collection, including counting and tracking of cars, pedestrians and bicycles (10 + 1 traffic counting system with TLS standard).

By creating easy and accessible traffic data visualizations, as the technology by Swarm Analytics allows, traffic flow optimization and informed city planning could be carried out.
