Challenge / Goal
During a public survey conducted in Duisburg it was found out that waiting time in queues was one of the major issues at recycling centres and other similar civic amenity sites, ultimately discouraging citizens to bring their recyclable materials for proper treatment.
This project had two main goals. Firstly, to simplify and make information more transparent, enabling citizens to plan their trip to the amenity site at the most convenient opportunity, optimizing traffic conditions and waiting time.
Secondly, to enable citizens to choose the best available site, with the lowest occupancy and waiting time in order to avoid waiting peaks.
Solution
Overhead sensors have been deployed to digitalise and evaluate the whole site occupancy. In addition, an algorithm that calculates waiting time dependent on the number of cars in queues and the number of cars on the site have been created and applied. The generated information is available on the website of WB Duisburg and their own mobile app, with which citizens can check for the best opportunity and plan their trip to the most accessible site.
Citizen participation
During a survey organized by the municipality, citizens brought up the problem. Such an information service, where they would be able to choose the most suitable sites was demanded. They also wanted to hear updates and get to know about this service via a web link.
