The SGL trial tested eight Virtual Loading Bays across London using Grid’s Kerb platform, exploring how bookable kerbside space could improve delivery efficiency, reduce congestion and emissions, support safer loading and help cities manage limited kerbside space more effectively.
The use case was initiated to address the growing pressure that freight and servicing activity places on London’s limited kerbside space. Delivery drivers often struggle to find suitable loading space, contributing to unnecessary vehicle movements, congestion, emissions and inefficient deliveries. Through the SGL Unpacked trial, Virtual Loading Bays were introduced across eight locations, using Grid’s Kerb platform to enable delivery operators to book dedicated kerbside space in advance.
The goal was to test whether digitally managed, bookable loading space could improve delivery efficiency and reliability, reduce time spent searching for space, support safer loading activity and reduce the environmental impact of urban freight. The trial also aimed to provide evidence for local authorities on how kerbside space can be managed more dynamically and effectively.
The project brought together local authorities, freight operators and technology partners to identify locations where delivery activity and competition for kerbside space created operational challenges. Eight Virtual Loading Bays were introduced across London and made bookable through Grid's Kerb Delivery platform.
Virtual Loading Bays (VLBs) offer a flexible, digital approach to managing kerbside access. A VLB is a digital dispensation allowing drivers to load and unload at locations where loading is normally restricted. Access times and locations are pre-agreed with local authorities, ensuring coordination between logistics operators and city planners.
Delivery drivers could then reserve dedicated loading space in advance, providing greater certainty that suitable space would be available when they arrived.
