Challenge / Goal
A 1km pedestrian route around the pond in EckartVaartbroek district was upgraded into a social interaction and health route for diverse groups of neighborhood citizens and users. The interactive lighting embedded in the footway provides a smart route for walkers and runners. To transform this location and to bring this route to its full potential, it will not only be lit with smart streetlights, but also equipped with battery storage, and carry extra utilities such as WiFi and sensors.
Solution
The system was designed jointly with the inhabitants.
The route has four types: there is a route for easy walking, walking at a fast pace, running calmly and running for advanced.People can trigger the system via panels at several different locations around the ponds and choose a walking/running speed. The floor embedded 4-colored lights follow users in the speed they have decided on. The solar powered tiles are embedded every 20m. The lights stimulate social interactions and enhance usability of the public space.
New services can be added in an open living lab approach.
