Challenge / Goal

As in most cities, inner-city traffic in Reutlingen is congested, parcel delivery drivers often park in the second row, emissions are rising and at the same time diesel driving bans are looming. According to EU regulations, half of all parcel deliveries should be emission-free by 2030. But the parcel market is growing rapidly and the volume of parcels is increasing from year to year. In 2020, it was already at 4.3 billion, and by 2026 it is expected to be 6.7 billion parcels per year in Germany.

The goal of the Reutlingen City Logistics project is to reduce traffic through intelligent and innovative bundling of parcel delivery and the use of existing infrastructures, thus contributing to climate protection. At the same time, digitalisation is also to be advanced. The challenge here is the logistical organisation of the material flow so that the operational and financial effort for bundling and delivery becomes economical. The population is to benefit not only by reducing the burden on the environment, but also through reliable delivery and flexible pick-up options. The functional principle is transferable to other areas within the city of Reutlingen and also to other municipalities.

Solution

The parcels are bundled and delivered directly to a hub in the city centre. From the hub, they are delivered, emission-free, to publicly accessible parcel lockers, multi-label stores and - at the desired time - to private end customers in the city. This works for deliveries from all parcel service providers and all online shops. The journey from the hub to the delivery destinations is taken over by a local courier service with emission-free vehicles. Bundled parcel delivery not only intelligently manages the trips, but also reduces them, thus easing traffic congestion and reducing emissions.

After the test operation, the project is to be transferred to an economic regular operation. In a second project phase, local retailers can optionally also be integrated. The transferability of the concept ensures nationwide expansion and cooperation with other municipalities.

pakadoo provides the complete concept, the app for parcel management in the hub, the open-supplier parcel lockers and the software platform for the end customers and integrates local partners. The result is a forward-looking project that stands for networked and digital mobility and is permanently optimised. pakadoo has been established on the market since 2015 with its software as a provider of a digital last mile solution and accompanies holistic city logistics projects from planning and development to the concrete implementation of measures.
