Challenge / Goal

Shared and private micro-mobility is rapidly expanding, while the necessary infrastructure is lagging far behind. This is largely due to the high cost and lengthy bureaucratic processes for the installation of charging and docking infrastructure.

Solution

SunCrafter and the Bochum Laboratory for Sustainability in Technology piloted a modular and grid-independent solar charging station on the campus of the Bochum University of Applied Sciences.

The station was built using ten upcycled photovoltaic modules, each with an output of 250W. The station also contains lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 7.2 kWh, storing the excess produced energy and allowing charging at night-time. The system is connected to the internet and can thus be monitored and controlled from any location. In addition, the data can be recorded and used for third-parties. The docking station has additional charging functions via USB and provides a WI-FI hotspot to allow nearby intercommunication, learning, and teaching.
