Challenge / Goal

Mülheim is a part of Cologne which is encircled by the river Rhine to the west, the motorway to the east and north, and other major roads to the south. It can be characterized as a former industrial and working class area now changing into an area with media companies.

The renovation of residential quarters leads to an increase in demand. With this increasing demand comes increasing traffic, which is a major problem. Traffic is caused by residents and commuters from surrounding areas of Cologne and nearby cities - such as Bonn and Düsseldorf - as well as delivery traffic.

We want to encourage behavioral change, from using a car towards more active modes of transport like walking and cycling in connection with trams, trains and other environmental friendly modes of transport.

Solution

Mobility hubs will provide commuters and residents with a location, where you can easily find various kinds of transport, such as trams, trains, buses, taxis, (e-)car-sharing, (e-)bike-sharing and parking lots with online management of parking spaces. Additionally, the mobility station can be used for charging electric vehicles.

There will be a possibility for the urban administration to regulate inner-city traffic by adjusting prices according to demand and capacity. Mobility stations provide access to a range of transport options, improving the flexibility of urban mobility and reducing the need for private car ownership.

Citizen participation

Flyers were distributed to inform the citizens. Local press was used to disseminate the information. Additionally, local videos were used.
