Challenge / Goal

Assessing the impact of traffic planning and mobility management in a new mix-use district still under planning, and connecting participatory planning, to better city / traffic planning processes.

Solution

As part of HUPMOBILE-project a Maptionnaire survey called “Mobility in the Turku region and the future of the harbour area” was arranged in the Turku region.

The challenges listed above were approached by finding mobility habits (based on socio-economic characteristics, travel behaviour in different seasons, preferences for future mobility services, and perceived health and life satisfaction). These were generated from the gathered survey data. The mobility habits were found to connect to spatial distribution in the region and opinions about the use of future mobility services and infrastructure for travelling to / from this new district.

The City of Turku also organised a series of events in October / November 2020, where the results of the survey on the mobility habits of residents were presented back to the public.

Citizen participation

The data collection for the survey “Mobility in Turku region and future of the harbour area” took place during January-February 2020. The survey was participated by 806 respondents, of which 704 responded to an invitation letter sent to a sample of randomly selected dwellers and 102 respondents answered the survey by an open invitation from the City of Turku.

The City of Turku organized a series of events at the turn of October/November 2020, which were built around the pop-up exhibition of high-profile idea competition results of the nearby Linnaniemi area. These events were also used to promote HUPMOBILE results, such as the tentative Joint Port Area Master and Mobility Plan of the target area, and how possible future solutions can support sustainable mobility in the area. These events also served as an important feedback channel to the public about the results of the survey on the mobility habits of residents.
