Challenge / Goal
Klaipėda municipality saw important steps being needed to be made to help promote and motivate local residents, to use cycling as a free and daily alternative of transport.
Many citizens did not use bikes for working or going to school because they were afraid of having their bikes stolen. Clearly then measures had to be put in place to make cycling in the city a more safe environment.
The overall aim was to make the city’s population more active and, as a result, more healthy.
Solution
4 bicycle storage points were installed in different urban areas of Klaipėda, thus making cycling available and affordable, not only for tourists, but for locals too. The main purpose of this project is to present and promote bicycles as a free alternative way to get around.
By implementing the new bike storage system, owners could leave their bicycles safe from theft, as well as from any potential damage caused by harsh weather conditions.
In terms of data collection for assesing the impact of this Use Case, bike counters will identify bicycles only, ignoring motorised vehicles and recoding passing cycling flows. Collected data will appear on the website, being available for different reports and statistics.
Citizen participation
Citizens were involved via survey, taking their opinion about the installation of public bicycle storage facilities in Klaipėda City. The survey involved 670 residents.
Functionality
To promote cycling in the city and to motivate citizens to be more active in their daily lives.
