Challenge / Goal

Gwent Archives collect, preserve and make accessible archives relating to the county of Gwent including historical documents, maps and books. The archives care for millions of records relating to Gwent’s past and makes them available for anyone interested in the history of the region.

Following an issue with their BMS, they required a monitoring system to be set up very quickly within the strong rooms, conservation rooms, research rooms and work rooms as the documents must be kept and stored within specific heat and humidity parameters to avoid damage or degradation.

Solution

We initially installed 4 Milesight AM307 sensors in the strong rooms to monitor the environment. The sensors were chosen as they were tested to be reliable, easy to setup and read, gave all the parameters required and were relatively cost effective. We already had a LoRaWAN gateway nearby but the signal inside the ‘strong rooms’ wasn’t ideal. We decided to install the sensors and monitor over a timescale of a few weeks.
