Challenge / Goal
Wandsworth is a London Borough located in the southwest part of Greater London. Putney, a district of Wandsworth, is partitioned by two main arterial roads; the A205 Upper Richmond Road and Putney High Street. The latter is one of London's most frequented roads due to its high commercial activity, thus air pollution has lately become a pressing problem. Due to the increasing traffic flow and high levels of air pollutants, the borough was declared an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) in 2001.
Key actions in Wandsworth´s Air Quality Action Plan are to increase the usage of active modes of transportation and to relocate street space to offer safer bike lanes and pavements. The challenge was, therefore, to offer additional solutions to city dwellers to improve their commuting conditions.
Solution
The solution proposed by Green City Solutions entailed the installation of urban filters. These are integrated moss modules filtering fine dust particles from the surrounding air, whilst simultaneously producing oxygen. The filters are supported by intelligent automated ventilation and irrigation systems that preserve the filtering ability of the living moss.
Moss leaves are characterised by having a large surface area that enables them to filter and attract a higher volume of air. Their root system has minimal contact with soil, allowing them to grow in the vertical modules. Similarly, their metabolism requires the digestion of trace elements from the atmosphere. In this way they are able to accumulate and retain air pollutants.
Citizen participation
The CityTree is not only a tool for cleaning the air, but also a communication hub to bring the people of Wandsworth together on climate change and ask for their feedback.
