Challenge / Goal
The B-Part co-working space is located in the heart of Berlin. It provides approximately 100 co-working workplaces for Berlin entrepreneurs and a community cafe that is open to the public. One of the issues identified in this location was the health challenges imposed by the proximity to the Gleisdreieck subway station. When trains brake to slow down, they release fine dust from the abrasion processes of the wheels and brakes. This fine dust is later transported to nearby areas, compromising the air quality there.
The quality of indoor air inside offices, schools, and other workplaces is important not only for workers' comfort but also for their health. Poor indoor air quality has been tied to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Therefore, to protect workers and local people from this fine dust and to allow them to breathe fresh air while taking a break, Green City Solutions was consulted to present a solution that would address the issue, but also appeal to B-Part's innovative, sustainable and creative culture.
Solution
After having analysed the wind direction, building characteristics, and location of emission sources, CityTrees were placed in the south-western part of the site to form a barrier against fine dust coming from the subway line. As these emissions are sparsely distributed, to increase the filtering effect the CityTrees were placed in a semicircle to concentrate the fresh air in one area and create a clean air zone.
CityTrees are urban filters that possess a unique combination of the natural capabilities of moss and innovative IoT technologies. The integrated moss filters in the CityTrees clean the air of fine dust and cool it on hot days. Thus, they make a positive contribution to the health of the people on site. The presence of nature in the workplace and the additional seating area can also help employees relax during breaks and feel more refreshed throughout the day.
Citizen participation
Together with the B-Part staff and our partners from COPRO, we organised an opening event to inform the community and to get to know everyone. We also used the B-Part ourselves as a co-working space for a few months and fell in love with the place and the people there. The overall concept of combining a creative think tank with green technology and an engaging location is simply marvelous!
