Challenge / Goal

Remote gathering information was always going to be a challenge due to the topography of the County area.  We have hills and mountains and large areas are rural.  We have large areas of the County without mobile phone signal.  We wanted to gather information from streams, make technical detail available to staff and also make the recorded water height levels viewable to the public too.  This allows the public to make their own decision as what to do with the water levels.

Solution

We used Dragino LiDAR sensors to monitor water levels.  The Dragino sensors have good IP water resistivity and from other projects, we know the addition of the external aerial is useful in ensuring signal strength.  The data is ingested into the corporate SQL databases and then presented to staff and the public using two different Grafana portals.  This allows us to present the data separately and ensures that the public dashboard system cannot "accidentally" gain access to inappropriate data.

Citizen participation

No one was involved as we needed to see if our idea would work.
