Challenge / Goal

The aim of the project is to reduce logistics traffic in the historic old town of Ettlingen, taking particular account of the structures of Ettlingen as a medium-sized town. Thanks to the innovative local delivery concept, local retailers can make the last or first part of their supply chain more sustainable and efficient in the future and also use the publicly accessible parcel lockers to deliver goods to their local customers. Different delivery methods such as the parcel lockers, but also doorstep delivery at the desired time and parcel delivery at the workplace, offer more convenience for residents.

The project is also intended to help minimise environmental pollution, reduce accidents and parking that does not conform to traffic regulations, and thus improve the quality of life and stay in the city center. Due to an EU target that stipulates that half of parcel delivery must be emission-free by 2030, the solution developed as part of the project can set standards for cities with comparable framework conditions.

Solution

To make last-mile delivery in Ettlingen's old town as efficient and sustainable as possible, a concept was developed to first bundle deliveries across parcel services at a central micro-hub and then deliver them by e-vehicles to various delivery points such as publicly accessible parcel lockers, multi-label stores and private end customers. This minimises delivery traffic in the old city and reduces CO2 emissions. An IT system adapted to local conditions ensures that the delivery process runs smoothly and connects the individual users.

With the involvement of private customers and local retailers, pakadoo is creating a city logistics concept that is sustainable in the long term. pakadoo is supplying the complete concept, the app for parcel management in the hub, the open-supplier parcel lockers and the software platform for end customers, and is integrating local partners. The result is a forward-looking project that stands for networked and digital mobility and is permanently optimised. pakadoo has been established on the market as a provider of a digital last-mile solution with its software since 2015 and accompanies holistic city logistics projects from planning and development, to the concrete implementation of measures.

Citizen participation

Surveys were conducted by local residents, which helped in the planning process.
