DronePort:MK creates a new regulatory-approved Concept of Operation for Trialling UAVs within an integrated Smart City Environment, using a shared, open data platform that connects ground- and air- planes, enabling cross-domain situational awareness to improve safety, using live city-based use cases
DronePort:MK set out to deliver these goals:
Establishment of a Concept of Operations that enables drones to fly in shared airspace in an open city environment
Establishing the role of the City authorities in licensing 3rd party operators to provide drone-based services across the city
Implementing new technologies to enable drone-based services to operate safely and securely within the city
Demonstrating these approaches through the provision of new drone-based services, including undertaking medical deliveries between Milton Keynes University Hospital and Willen Hospice and Asset and Infrastructure Surveys on behalf of Milton Keynes City Council Highways Department
We worked with a local consortium to develop the solution. The team included the City Council, who led on legal and regulatory work, Smart City Consultancy who provided a number of operational capabilities including access to the existing Smart City testbed, Smart City Data Exchange and Smart City Control Centre, Satellite Applications Catapult, a research and technology organisation who provided the advanced wireless technology and Cranfield University who provided airspace modernisation and wider technology expertise. We also ran a procurement exercise and selected two companies to work with us to provide the specialist drone and sensor capabilities to support deployment as well as with teams from the City Council Highways Department and the local hospital.
As part of the project, the City Council is undertook extensive local engagement and consultation activities with local service providers, such as the hospital and hospice team, with service providers from the council and with commercial organisations seeking to establish drone-based services across the city. In addition to the stakeholder engagement activities required to secure the necessary regulatory approvals, the City Council is undertaking extensive local engagement and consultation activities, testing peoples perceptions and trust in drone-based services, promoting the possibilities and adapting plans based on feedback, as well as work with local educators to engage students in the data science and related aspects of the technology.
