In order to make cities and their sights more tangible for tourists and their own citizens, digital solutions have been used for several years. Among other things, apps are also used for this purpose. Until now, it has not been possible to gain an insight into historical places and their buildings directly on site.
SpotAR has developed the app SoesTour together with the project sponsor Wirtschaft & Marketing Soest GmbH. Using augmented reality, 3D models of historical buildings become visible in the camera image of the mobile phone or tablet where they once stood. The 3D models are positioned by Computer Vision and Cloud Anchors where they once stood and can therefore only be viewed there.
The reconstruction of the models is based on 3D data of the city of Soest and historians guidance. With the help of modern technologies such as computer vision and object recognition, the virtual models fit into the city backdrop as it stands today and some can even be viewed from the inside.
We asked different stakeholders of the cities to participate in deciding which parts of the city should be digitally reconstructed. In the end we received 5 different ideas from stakeholders, such as historians of the city.
