Optimized spatial location of lockers for last-mile delivery in Zaragoza
Development of a synthetic (static) map and a dynamic map to guide city planners on the optimal social perspective location of effective micro-hubs for last-mile delivery, as a data-driven approach to optimizing parcel locker locations, reinforcing Zaragoza’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, alleviating congestion, and revitalizing local commerce.
Zaragoza City of Knowledge (attached to Zaragoza City Council), contracted BABLE to showcase avant-garde ML-powered Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) models applied to urban planning and spatial location, aligned with the 3rd level of ambition of a NEB project. In this sense, the study presented under this chapter, “Scalable, user-centred practices for the dynamic planning of informal micro-hubs for urban logistics in the 15-minute city” is not just about optimizing informal micro-hubs placement, but designing an accessible, inclusive, and human-centred urban logistics system that reflects the principles of the NEB and integrates a SSH perspective. More than a technical challenge, last-mile logistics is a question of urban experience, social cohesion, and perceived accessibility.
IMPACT
Going beyond conventional GIS analysis, this study pioneers an AI-powered dynamic logistics mapping concept for integrating real-time logistics data into decision-making. By developing a visor for dynamic mapping, the pilot provides urban planners with an adaptable tool that allows city decision-makers to customize logistics planning based on evolving parameters, citizen behaviour, and service demand patterns. The combination of static and dynamic data layers, forecasting through machine learning, and behavioural data integration ensures that Zaragoza can continuously refine its urban logistics network, balancing CO₂ reduction, congestion alleviation, revitalization of local businesses, and service efficiency.
By sharing this methodology and advancing the concept of AI-powered urban logistics adaptation, Zaragoza is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable last-mile logistics innovation. This approach serves as a replicable model for other cities, demonstrating how data-driven logistics infrastructure can dynamically support the principles of the 15-minute city while responding to real-time urban changes.
