El Sistema de Gestión Integral Inteligente de las playas de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria se implementa como solución innovadora y pionera en España

A powerful tool for capturing, processing and transmission of data on the beaches of Las Canteras, Las Alcaravaneras and La Laja allows the spatial and temporal monitoring of high resolution of the beaches.
The system makes available to the public the LPA Beach application that can be downloaded for free for iOS and Android, in Spanish and English, with real-time information on occupancy, sea state, currents, temperature and public services, among others.

A powerful tool for data capture, processing and transmission, innovative and pioneering. The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has developed and implemented the Ciudad de Mar Intelligent Integrated Management System, an innovative and pioneering technological solution in Spain, available to public managers, researchers, citizens and visitors.
It is a system for monitoring the environmental status of the city's coastline through the deployment of a network of sensors and videometry stations, which allows the data captured in high resolution and anonymous to be displayed and applied interactively and dynamically.
The System, developed by the Municipal Society SAGULPA and the City of Sea Area, in collaboration with in collaboration with the Modernization area, shows the full potential of the DATALAB project that has been developed in several phases (Smart Beach 1 and Smart Beach 2) in the last two years, in the scope of the DATALAB project (MAC2/2.3d/323), co-financed by the Interreg MAC 2014-2020 Cooperation Program.
The Councilor for Tourism and City of Sea, Pedro Quevedo; the Councilor for Mobility and president of Sagulpa, Jose Eduardo Ramirez; and the general coordinator of Modernization of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Roberto Moreno, presented this Wednesday, in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, this digital solution that allows having medium and long term data to understand, study and manage the environmental situation of the beaches in the current scenario of global change and ocean warming.
In this sense, the system allows monitoring the evolution of the morphology and hydrodynamics of the coastline, the coastline, tides, sediments, currents and risk areas, as well as pointing out the effects of human activity on the beaches.

The System works thanks to the implementation of 6 videometric stations, four of them in Las Canteras Beach, one in Las Alcaravaneras and one in La Laja. The stations, at 10 meters high, carry up to 3 cameras, with photovoltaic power supply, designed with protection elements to withstand the high exposure and corrosion conditions of the marine environment.

The councilman of Ciudad de Mar, Pedro Quevedo, pointed out that this is "a coordination work in the City Council itself, which began to provide solutions to the management needs of Ciudad de Mar and has become an innovative and pioneering system in Spain that places the city at the technological forefront within the Smart Cities".

The system's software uses advanced algorithms for analyzing the images collected by the cameras to make specific and predictive calculations of occupation or warnings of dangerous currents for security and emergency services and beach users themselves.

For his part, José Eduardo Ramírez, emphasized the "usefulness of this intelligent system for citizens and for the administration itself, which allows us to act and make decisions based on empirical data in the sand and water, but also on the promenade. It is a work of several years that now gives us excellent results".

The general coordinator of Modernization, Roberto Moreno, pointed out that "the beach management system and its application, is the tangible example of the work being done within the Digital Agenda of the city that puts the citizen at the center of municipal management".

LPA Beach, an APP to inform citizens in real time
The Integral and Intelligent Management System of the beaches makes available to citizens and visitors (available in Spanish and English) the LPA Beach app, available for free download on iOS and Android, and which allows real-time access to information on weather and sea conditions; in addition to tides, currents and risk areas, available sand, occupancy and public services of the beaches of Las Canteras, Las Alcaravaneras and La Laja.
The application shows, among other data, the most recent images of each sector of the beaches, the tide forecast and the state of the currents and risk areas for bathers, as well as the available sand surface according to the high and low tide. Also, the weather forecast for the current and the next day and the forecast of occupancy of bathers in each sector of the beaches for a subsequent period of two hours.
In addition, LPA Beach informs the user about the mobility options to reach each beach in a sustainable way from the place where it is located, as well as where they are and what are the schedules of public services, such as spas, security and emergencies (Red Cross), tourist information points and the accessible area for assisted bathing.
The information provided in this tool is an effort of the government group to make available to citizens and visitors, the best information available, in order to enjoy the beaches throughout the year in a responsible and safe manner.
This global action is part of the DATALAB project (MAC2/2.3d/323), co-financed by the Interreg MAC 2014-2020 Cooperation Program, which aims to improve the capacity of municipal management towards an intelligent use of data, addressing this technological challenge and taking advantage of digital information to consolidate Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as an innovative space.
LPA Beach is part of the Municipal Digital Agenda 2021-2025 (ADM) of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the line of action of Smart Beach and Coastal Management.
