In an unprecedented collaboration, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, bwcon research gGmbH, Atlas IoT LAB GmbH and BABLE GmbH have launched an ambitious project under the OUPEN SmartCity made in BW initiative, which started on October 1, 2023 and will run for two years. The aim of this project is to develop and introduce the first interoperability testbed and certification system of open standards for smart city information and communication technology (ICT) platforms and systems.

Given the challenges that cities face - technical and human capacities that make decisions on innovative and technological solutions difficult and the patchwork of incompatible products and components - this collaborative project sets a new standard for the integration of smart city solutions. By enabling an open, flexible and future-proof urban ICT ecosystem, the project actively supports the objectives of the European Green Deal.

Municipalities and technology providers will be able to easily and efficiently integrate new hardware and software solutions into urban data ecosystems via "plug & play". This marks a significant step forward in the development of sustainable cities and public spaces, with a focus on optimizing economic processes in harmony with environmental protection.
Within the project framework, the system will not only be developed, but also tested and validated with innovative solution providers in municipalities. A scientific study on the use of standards accompanies the project to ensure its effectiveness and sustainability.

With the expertise of each economic partner in its core tasks, this project contributes significantly to the sustainable development of municipalities and the optimization of economic processes to protect the environment. The OUPEN SmartCity made in BW initiative is thus at the forefront of the movement towards a smarter, more sustainable future for our cities.
