Bielefeld Smart Old Town (Project altstadt.raum)
Aware of the enormous importance of science for the economic and social development of the city and region, Bielefeld has initiated a process to consistently develop the science location Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL). Against this background, the research strength available at Bielefeld University and the University of Applied Sciences is to be combined with the innovative strength available in the regional economy. The think tank for OWL, planned as a joint project as part of the "Bielefeld Research and Innovation Campus - BRIC", will provide a sustainable, spatial platform for the joint processing of current research questions at the interface between science and practice. In addition, BRIC plays a central role in attracting and locating non-university research institutions and should provide space for knowledge-intensive spin-offs. The key to the concept is the close cooperation between
a) Bielefeld University and Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and non-university research institutions,
b) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and spin-offs of partners from the OWL region and
c) the regional action area, consisting of the business development agency, the region and the city of Bielefeld, as well as their real laboratory and social breeding grounds).
