Cities Coalition for Digital Rights

The Cities Coalition for Digital Rights is an international alliance formed in 2018 by the Barcelona, Amsterdam and New York city councils to protect and promote people’s digital rights on a global level.

The coalition creates policies, tools and resources to help move forward along these lines, in keeping with the Declaration of Human Rights and the principles of the internet, established within the framework of the UN Internet Governance Forum, and in coordination with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN Human Rights), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and EUROCITIES.

Further information can be found at citiesfordigitalrights.org, along with the declaration signed by these three cities, based on five main principles:

  1. Equal and universal access to the internet, computer literacy.
  2. Privacy, data protection and security.
  3. Transparency, accountability, and non-discrimination in data, content, and algorithms.
  4. Participatory democracy, diversity, and inclusion.
  5. Open and ethical digital service standards.
