Join the discussion:...
The implementation of new urban solutions and the involvement of a variety of stakeholders can create questions and challenges for those involved in that process. The advantage of belonging to an online Smart City community is that sharing knowledge and experiences can be done easily and quickly. The aim of this posts series is to introduce and open the discussion about current challenges in the Smart City sector, taking advantage of the experienced community that participates in this platform. The topic of this post is: What is the role of public-private cooperation in the future development of smart cities? To start the discussion, we have asked Per Erling Fjeld, a project manager from Lyse (a Norwegian industrial group operating within the field of energy and fibre-based broadband), to share his thoughts: "There is an established dichotomy with city governments acting as customers and the industry as vendors when it comes to developing smart cities and communities. However, the picture has recently become richer with more colours added. The private sector works with citizen organisations, academic institutions and other actors in addition to being clear-cut bidders in city tenders, etc. The same multiple approach can be identified on the purchasing side. In short, there is no definable roles, as this kind of cooperation is the sheer essence of any smart community endeavor." What are your experiences in this area? What is your advice for future smart city projects? What other issues or questions come to your mind when thinking about public-private cooperation? Share your insights with the community by commenting below! [Are you facing another kind of challege and would like to gather feedback from the community? Create a post! ]

Soft power comes first
The technological focus of many smart city projects relies on top-down innovations, ignoring the role that citizens can play in improving their local communities. While top-down innovation is important, it often fails to take into account citizen needs and so may not serve their best interests. In many people-centered product presentation citizens perceived as passive consumers of city services and as generators of data. There is remarkable reflection of communications specialist who worked on transport development project: «there is One small issue. We had to tell residents about our plans and their future agreement to all steps was an essential part of it». This is a common story when city governments are aimed to hardware improvement while people simple do not understand what and how to use it. In recent research Gartner advisory firm suggests local government to engage with citizens to find out their needs before investing millions into smart city programs.

OSRAM introduced a full...
OSRAM Lighting Solutions has introduced a full HD video camera for the SL11 road luminaire. The camera, which is built into a luminaire and can be swivelled, enables municipalities and companies to easily roll out camera networks to the existing street lighting. Thanks to its ONVIF function, it can be easily integrated into existing video systems. The camera serves both as a security camera and as a sensor. Various video analytics software packages from cooperation partners are available for this purpose. This software detects free parking spaces, monitors the flow of traffic and traffic jams, reports the installation of posters and graffiti or the removal of objects, for example. In addition, the video analytics software detects movement or fence overruns and automatically sends alarms. For the camera I am looking for interested communities and other video analytics providers, whose solution I can try out with the camera.
