Help build an open market...
Help build an open market for data and win 750,000 euro Enter the competition and win up to 750,000 euro in co-financing for your idea for an open, trusted and fair market for data sharing. A market that is scalable and broadly applicable and that allows parties in the Amsterdam area to work on a smart, green and healthy region. Data: fuel for innovation Data fuels growth and innovation and offers new opportunities for a smarter, greener and healthier society. In healthcare for example, data can predict epidemics, prevent diseases and improve treatments. Or what about governments, that can use data to offer better and more efficient public transport. Freight carriers use data to share capacity utilization rates with parties interested in cargo space, data can make production and waste flows transparent and so many more applications are conceivable. Concerns about data sharing But at the same time, only a fraction of all data is shared. Uncertainty about safety, privacy, property rights and concerns with regards to a unfair market playing field, make the process of exchanging data so expensive, inefficient and legally cumbersome that parties prefer not to exchange data at all. As a result, data exchange is often limited to open (government) data. Other data such as commercial and industrial data, is not widely shared. A real data economy requires a shared, trusted infrastructure that, in combination with the right incentives, entices parties to share data, because this benefits themselves or a common goal. I.e. an open, trusted and fair market for data. Inspirational examples National and international experiments are being conducted in various collaborations with data markets that offer a solution to the above challenges. For instance: - Amsterdam Data Exchange ( AMDEX ): in the metropolitan area, public and private partners work together on the development of a data exchange; - IShare and Data Logistics 4 Logistics Data : sharing confidential and uniform data between partners in the logistics chain; - Personal Health Train : various institutes work together to share health data confidentially; - International Data Spaces : various international data sharing initiatives; - IOTA : the realization of data markets for sensor data. Want to participate? Are you an organization that is familiar with digital technology and do you know how to use your knowledge for a smart, green and healthy region? Register for this competition by clicking on the link below. Deadline for registration is on Tuesday 4 June before 10:00 am. For more information, click here.

Health 4.0 Forum - What...
Several expert discussions took place during the Health 4.0 Forum in Vienna, which included e.g. the trustworthiness of artificial intelligence, the role of the patient in a digitalised healthcare sector, ethical discussions about the use of new technologies, the introduction of virtual reality and artificial intelligence in the work of the practitioners, and many others. In order to continue the conversation, but also to open the discussion to a wider audience from the Smart City sector, we invite the Health 4.0 participants and other interested parties to share their opinions on: What is the role of companies and local governments in the advancement of the digitalisation of the healthcare sector? And what should they take into consideration to guarantee that the introduction of new healthcare technologies is done in a sustainable and fair manner?

Health 4.0 Forum -...
Last week, the Health 4.0 Forum was held at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Vienna, which brought together experts to debate the future of the healthcare sector in a context of digitalisation. And whilst the digitalisation of the health sector represents one of the most promising developments of our times, it has brought along new debates on privacy, regulation, policy and primary use cases. This post introduces some of the discussions that took place during the event. "Digital technology and information systems are revolutionising the healthcare field through, for example, the integration of big data, linked electronic records, and harnessing data to support public health decision making" Prof. Theo Arvanitis from the Institute of Digital Healthcare at the University of Warwick "Digitalisation and the use of new technologies in the healthcare sector can empower the patient, but we need to be careful to not leave people behind (e.g. those that have no access to new technologies)" Dr. Harriet Teare from the Centre for Health, Law and Emerging Technologies (University of Oxford). "Predictive psychiatry services are already available, but it is highly important to bring young people voices and experiences into the discussion and development of those services" Gabriela Pavarini from the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities "There is no reason to mistrust the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector as long as: the final decision is with the human, the data is representative & only diagnostic report is left to AI" Georg Dorffner from the Medical University of Vienna. This Health 4.0 Forum was organised by the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN), BABLE and the UK Department of International Trade (DIT). It was further supported by Fraunhofer IAIS and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). The forum brought together industry, government, and research experts from the UK, Austria, Germany and Switzerland to spark cooperation in health research and encourage the collaboration between industries.

Upcoming: Morgenstadt...
The way we, as Humans, have developed our Lifestyle, is having a negative impact on our Earths’ warming up: Currently, we find ourselves at a rate of about 0.17 °C per decade. Additionally the effort on reducing the carbon budget to limit an increase of 1.5°C, established in the Paris Agreement, still requires major actions. The Morgenstadt Innovation Network organizes three times per year conferences seeking to discuss and transform city challenges in innovative solutions shaping the Urban future of our cities . The first Morgenstadt Conference of the year will take place in Leipzig on the 4 th and 5 th of April on CO 2 Neutral Smart Cities . The main goal of this Conference is to define an action- and roadmap- to find solutions on how to decrease our CO 2 emissions in the sectors of Energy, Mobility, Data and Buildings. Research Institutions, companies and cities will come together to deepen their knowledge in those areas and to expand their own scope of action in order to meet the current challenges that cities are facing. This is especially important because, according to the Global Climate Action Summit 2018, annual emissions related to existing buildings were about 9 Gt CO 2e in 2016, 40% from non-residential buildings and 60% of those coming from residential, meaning that each one of us has a say in reducing CO 2 emissions. Here you can find the full program, and the Agenda of the Conference , and by clicking in this link, you can get registered to the event . Registrations will be open until the 24 th of March 2019 .

Horizon Prize for Social...
The European Commission's Horizon Prize for Social Innovation will reward the best solutions for improving the travel mobility of older people: €1 000 000 will be awarded to the best solution and the four runner-up prizes will receive €250 000 each. The prize was launched during the “ Opening up to an era of social innovation ” conference in Lisbon on 27 November 2017. Submissions will be accepted until 28 February 2019 and the prize will be awarded in the second or third quarter of 2019. Why this Prize? The European Union’s population is ageing. There will be 75 million people over the age of 65 in Europe in 2020, and 88 million in 2030. The share of people aged 65+ should increase from 17.5% of the population in 2010 to 29.5% in 2060 in the EU-27. This requires reconsidering existing mobility systems in order to meet the needs of older people and help to combat social exclusion and support independent living especially for those with reduced mobility. Providing adequate mobility solutions for older citizens enables them to continue to fully participate in cultural, educational and health activities and services, and to remain active participants of the economy. Developing new mobility solutions or improving existing ones will also provide new opportunities for innovative small companies, transport operators, social economy start-ups and NGOs at local, regional or national level. Challenge The purpose of the contest is to develop innovative and sustainable mobility solutions for older people (65+). The prizes will be awarded, after closure of the contest, to the applicants who in the opinion of the jury demonstrate a solution that best addresses the award criteria. The solutions submitted, likely to combine technological, social and behavioral features, must be implemented for several months during the contest period. The jury will assess the work and progress made by the applicants during an implementation period of at least 5 months between the opening of the prize and the submission of the applications, based on measurable evidence that they will have to provide. Applicants will also have to demonstrate that their solution can be scaled-up and replicated in different contexts. For more detailed information on the criteria of the prize, please check out the Rules of Contest . Schedule The contest has been launched and you can apply until 28 February 2019. Rules & Guidance Who can join the contest? The contest is open to any legal entity or groups of legal entities established in EU Member States or in countries associated to Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme. How will your application be evaluated? Once the contest is closed, a high level jury will evaluate all eligible entries against the following award criteria: Measurability, Social impact, Economic impact, Community engagement, Scalability and replicability, Sustainability, Originality and creativity. The European Commission's challenge prizes will be awarded to the entries that are the most innovative and have the largest social impact whilst meeting the award criteria. These best solutions should be developed and implemented for a period of at least 5 months during the contest period. More information and Prize application

The implementation of new urban solutions and the involvement of a variety of stakeholders can create questions and challenges for those involved in that process. The advantage of belonging to an online Smart City community is that sharing knowledge and experiences can be done easily and quickly. The aim of this posts series is to introduce and open the discussion about current challenges in the Smart City sector, taking advantage of the experienced community that participates in this platform. The topic of this post is: What are the most important aspects to be considered when scaling-up smart city solutions? To start the discussion, we have asked @Nathan Pierce , Head of Smart London Team & Programme Director of Sharing Cities , to share his thoughts: "The most important aspects to considering when scaling up are need, return and quality. Is there sufficient need for the technology and has that need been aggregated city wide? Is there a clear return on investment? Has the technology been packaged in such a way that politicians, finance directors and other key stakeholders can understand the technology and how it will benefit their city." The aim of this posts series is to introduce and open the discussion about current challenges in the Smart City sector, taking advantage of the experienced community that participates in this platform. The topic of this post is: What is the role of public-private cooperation in the future development of smart cities? To start the discussion, we have asked Per Erling Fjeld, a project manager from Lyse (a Norwegian industrial group operating within the field of energy and fibre-based broadband), to share his thoughts: "There is an established dichotomy with city governments acting as customers and the industry as vendors when it comes to developing smart cities and communities. However, the picture has recently become richer with more colours added. The private sector works with citizen organisations, academic institutions and other actors in addition to being clear-cut bidders in city tenders, etc. The same multiple approach can be identified on the purchasing side. In short, there is no definable roles, as this kind of cooperation is the sheer essence of any smart community endeavor." What are your experiences in this area? What is your advice for future smart city projects? What other issues or questions come to your mind when thinking about public-private cooperation?
