Webinar on Smart Cities...

Boyd Cohen , Ph.D., is an urban strategist focused on the areas of urban innovation , entrepreneurship , smart cities and urban mobility . He has published 3 books ( Climate Capitalism , 2011; The Emergence of the Urban Entrepreneur , 2016; Post-capitalist Entrepreneurship , 2017). In 2017, he co-founded Iomob , which is a blockchain startup seeking to disrupt the mobility sector by providing an open protocol for decentralized mobility aggregation. Boyd also led the foundation of the Blockchain Cities Alliance , forming a growing coalition of organizations committed to advancing the adoption of blockchain in smart cities . Boyd created the Smart Cities Wheel as a framework for developing and implementing smart city strategies and for benchmarking cities around the globe. It has been translated into Spanish, Swedish, Hebrew and Dutch among other languages. After finishing a three-year stint at Accenture, Boyd obtained his Ph.D. in strategy and entrepreneurship from the University of Colorado (2001).

Nottingham ready to beat...
As Theresa May signs into law a commitment to bring the UK’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, one city in the UK is on its way to achieving this goal 22 years sooner As one of her final acts as Prime Minister, Theresa May , announced that she will be signing into law a pledge to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 . This would make Britain the first member of the G7 to make such a commitment official. The announcement was largely applauded by environmental groups but there was also criticism of how the target will be met and whether it is in fact feasible. However, one city in the UK is making strides to be net zero all on their own 22 years earlier. Nottingham , located 200 km north of London, has been on the forefront of reducing carbon emissions since 2000 when it signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change . Since then they have been ahead of schedule in meeting the 2020 targets set out in the Kyoto protocol back in 2005 and they have already surpassed their own 2020 Energy Strategy targets of a 26% reduction in carbon emissions having reduced emissions by 39%. Now, spurred on in part by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2018 report , Nottingham City Council has pledged to be net zero by 2028 . To meet such lofty goals the city has invested in one of the UK’s largest electric bus fleets , expanded their tram network, runs many services on renewable sources, improved cycling facilities and installed solar panels on over 4500 domestic properties. An interesting feature of Nottingham’s strategy though has been retaining control of key assets, such as heat networks and transport systems , along with a desire to build in-house ability. “There has been a policy of trying to push things forward and retain municipal control,” says Jonathan Ward, Principal Energy Policy Officer with Nottingham City Council. By taking this approach, the city has been able to provide energy and heat to its citizens in a responsible and affordable way through initiatives like the creation of Robin Hood Energy . This not-for-profit company is owned by city council and aims to distribute low cost energy and address fuel poverty . As of 2018, 100% of the electricity they provide is renewable. The council also owns a heat network that supplies heat to business and residents along with smart meter functions. Ward explains that in council, “there’s been an ethos of making sure these measures are a just transition as well.” This, “just transition” is another key feature of Nottingham’s climate change strategy. “It shouldn’t be a message of less,” believes Ward, “rather how do we do things differently and improve other things at the same time.” To this aim they are involved in several building refurbishment projects aimed directly at improving citizens quality of life, many of which are funded in part by the European project Remourban . As part of this venture, the council was able to roll out the ultra low-energy home pilot program based on the sustainable Energiesprong concept. This method can retrofit and refurbish flats using prefabricated components in a few days with a 30-year warranty. Once completed these homes are energy efficient, net zero residences that use renewable energy created from the structure. The Nottingham Energiesprong scheme entails renovations to 150 homes and is focused on some of the older houses which are currently difficult to heat and will lift these residents out of fuel poverty. Despite all these initiatives and success stories, there is only some much local authorities can do to address this global problem, and so Nottingham welcomes the commitment made at the national level . “Cities have been setting ambitious targets for some time,” says Ward, “but it is great when you got the international and national targets driving things.” He believes the 2050 target is beneficial because it will provide a country wide framework for everyone to plan and work around. By raising the national minimum requirements and adding stronger weights to sustainability, considerations alongside economic and housing targets local planners should be able to do more. The pledge will also help address things outside of local control, such as the countries energy grid, the evolution of industry and the electrification of transport. By Bradley van Paridon

Cities Coalition for...
The Cities Coalition for Digital Rights is an international alliance formed in 2018 by the Barcelona, Amsterdam and New York city councils to protect and promote people’s digital rights on a global level. The coalition creates policies, tools and resources to help move forward along these lines, in keeping with the Declaration of Human Rights and the principles of the internet, established within the framework of the UN Internet Governance Forum, and in coordination with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN Human Rights), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and EUROCITIES. BABLE Future Sessions in...
An early dialogue between different stakeholders can significantly ease the implementation of Smart City projects. Through the BABLE Future Sessions we provide a space to have such dialogues in a open way - without any obligations – and with the option to find future partners and ideas. In each session a city presents a vision, a challenge or a plan which then will be discussed with all paricipants - different actors involved in innovative urban projects, such local governments, companies, researchers, etc. During the Smart City Solutions Expo in September in Stuttgart on the 19th of September , there will be two BABLE Future Sessions organised in cooperation with the city of Waiblingen . 1) Decreasing commuting traffic: The role of Workhubs 2) E-Government: Easing Public & Corperate Service? (using the example of service-bw ) The sessions of approximatley 90 minutes will take place in the Regio Lounge at Messe Stuttgart. Social Challenge to...
Barcelona City Council wants to encourage socio-technological entrepreneurship to improve the quality of life of our residents. Barcelona’s population is aging. People ages 65 and older will represent a quarter of the population by 2038. With the aim to better respond to the needs of the elderly, the Social Rights Department and the i.lab of the Commissioner of Technology and Digital Innovation, launch the challenge: How can we effectively address the needs of the elderly considering their functional dependency? We invite you to present your proposal before 26 September 2019 in one of the following two categories: Tested projects or proven methodologies that generate social cohesion , for example, activating the community to provide support to the elderly, strengthening social and solidarity economy models, intergenerational collaboration and integration mechanisms. New technology and/or robotic solutions that enable a more effective identification of the needs of elderly people, improve the quality and delivery of social services, and the response time to meet those needs. The winner will receive an award of 20,000 EUR to implement a pilot in Barcelona and will have the opportunity to work closely with municipal agents with wide experience in social innovation. Die TÜV SÜD Akademie bietet ab Herbst 2019 in Kooperation mit BABLE Smart Cities die erste Smart City Schulung Deutschlands an, die erfolgreiche Teilnehmer kompakt in 2 Tagen zur "Smart City Fachkraft" ausbildet. Innerhalb der zweitägigen Schulung erhalten die Teilnehmer anhand von Beispielen und Erfahrungen aus Pilotstädten und -projekten weltweit einen Überblick in die Möglichkeiten und aktuellen Entwicklungen bezüglich der Planung und Umsetzung innovativer, nachhaltiger und digitaler Stadtmodelle. Anhand von verschiedenen Instrumenten und Modellen bekommen die Teilnehmer Anregungen für die Entwicklung integrierter Lösungsansätze und die Erstellung von Smart City Roadmaps und Strategien. Zudem bietet die Schulung Raum für Erfahrungsaustausch und Diskussion mit Experten, die das Thema Smart City global begleiten, beraten und unterstützen. Am 17.-18. September 2019 findet die Pilotveranstaltung „Smart City – Basiswissen für digitale und nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung“ im Rahmen der Messe Smart City Solutions auf dem Gelände der Messe in Stuttgart statt. In cooperation with BABLE Smart Cities, TÜV SÜD Academy will be offering Germany's first Smart City training course starting in autumn 2019. Successful participants will receive compact training to become "Smart City specialists" in two days. During the two-day training, participants will gain an overview of the possibilities and current developments in the planning and implementation of innovative, sustainable and digital city models based on examples and experiences from pilot cities and projects worldwide. Using various instruments and models, the participants receive suggestions for the development of integrated solutions and the creation of Smart City Roadmaps and strategies. In addition, the training offers space for exchange of experience and discussion with experts who accompany, advise and support the topic of Smart City globally.
