Challenge / Goal

Anyone who knows the old imperial city of Aachen also knows its inadequate mobility situation. Aachen's historical center is distinguished by its narrow streets that complicate the transit of cars and larger vehicles. As a result of this, public transportation is seldomly the fastest and most convenient mode of transport.
Students, representing 20 % of Aachen's residents, are also frequently affected by the latter, as the majority have to move quickly from one university building to the next across the historical center.
The city has also embraced the objective of reducing its NOx emissions through clean and light mobility solutions.

Solutions

With an enlarged net of automated rental stations for e-bikes, Velocity Region Aachen supports public transport and creates a sustainable way of getting around without loss of comfort, especially during peak times. The station-based rental system not only enables access to inexpensive and flexible mobility but also makes Aachen more livable.
There are currently around 90 stations and 270 e-bikes that can be easily borrowed and returned at any station in the city using a smartphone app.
The Velocity idea extends not only to the city center but to all municipalities in the Aachen border region. In 2018, a rental station was opened in the Dutch border communities of Kerkrade, which promotes cross-border transport.
