Unidirectional functional lighting in Eckart
Cities
Linked Solutions
Challenge / Goal
The district of Eckart Vaartbroek in Eindhoven has a pond with a running track around it. The track however was not able to have normal streetlights as the local fauna would be affected by lighting. However, this lead to increased safety concerns and the track was not being used in the late evenings.
Solutions
The Smart Lighting solution was developed with the aim increasing the safety in the area by providing adequate lights without harming the local fauna. A special kind of uni-directional lighting was designed, which illuminates only in one direction. The light is adopted to allow for a natural moon-light effect and has very futuristic design along with being highly energy efficient. Additionally, 10 out of the 30 poles installed are equipped with sensors that dim the light when not many pedestrians are using the area. 3 gateways have been installed on the poles to provide free public Wi-Fi in the area.
