Challenge / Goal

As in most cities, inner-city traffic in Reutlingen is congested, parcel delivery drivers often park in the second row, emissions are rising, and at the same time there is the threat of diesel driving bans. According to an EU target, half of parcel delivery must be emission-free by 2030. But the parcel market is growing rapidly and parcel volumes are increasing year by year. In 2020, the figure was already 4.3 billion, and by 2026 it is expected to be 6.7 billion shipments per year in Germany. 


The aim of the Reutlingen City Logistics project is to reduce traffic through intelligent and innovative bundled management of parcel delivery and the use of existing infrastructures in order to contribute to climate protection. At the same time, digitization is also to be driven forward. The challenge here is the logistical organization of the material flow so that the operational and financial effort of bundling and delivery becomes economical. The population is to benefit not only by reducing the burden on the environment, but also through reliable delivery and flexible pick-up options. The functional principle is transferable to other areas within the city of Reutlingen as well as to other municipalities.

Solution

Parcels are delivered bundled directly at a hub in a city center location. From the hub, they are delivered emission-free to publicly accessible parcel lockers, multilabel stores and - at the desired time - to private end customers in the city. This works with deliveries from all parcel service providers and all online stores. The journey from the hub to the delivery destinations is handled by a local courier service with zero-emission vehicles. Bundled parcel delivery not only intelligently manages trips but also reduces them, easing traffic congestion and cutting emissions.


After the test operation, the project is to be transferred to an economical regular operation. In a second project phase, local retailers can optionally be integrated. Due to the transferability of the concept, the area-wide expansion and cooperation with other municipalities is guaranteed.


pakadoo supplies the complete concept, the app for parcel management in the hub, the open-supplier parcel lockers and the software platform for the end customers, and integrates local partners. The result is a forward-looking project that stands for networked and digital mobility and is permanently optimized. pakadoo has been established on the market as a provider of a digital last-mile solution with its software since 2015 and accompanies holistic city logistics projects from planning and development to the concrete implementation of measures.
