Challenge / Goal
Stratumseind is a very busy and popular nightlife area. In an average weekend between 15.000 and 20.000 people may visit the 250 meter street with over 50 cafes and clubs. Every weekend there were multiple incidents of aggression and fights in the area. The main aim was to maintain safety and security in the area.
Solutions
A living lab was setup with 20 sound cameras which monitor the noise levels from the streets and nearby pubs. The system is equipped with audio classifier which detects aggression. The connected app helps in immediately detecting aggressive people and other loud sound disturbances and notify the police. Trained law enforcement agents from the municipality are informed about any events directly on their phone. This helps in maintaining safety and security in the area at all times.
The sensors are able to find out the exact position of a sound source. Safety features are enabled without continuously perceived intrusive monitoring via cameras. Lights from the light poles can be adjusted (color and intensity) also based on incidents.
Citizen Participation
The bar owners and residents of the area were actively involved in the development of the system.
