Challenge / Goal

Aberdeen city is unusual in the sense that it's port is in the very heart of the city centre. The port is of extreme importance to the regional economy and a new, second harbour is due to be opened in 2020 creating new economic opportunities. Alongside this is the new peripheral national highway, the Aberdeen Western Pheripheral Route (AWPR).  These two major developments will affect freight and general traffic flows around the Aberdeen City Region. As such, the regional transport partnerhip for North East Scotland (NESTRANS) analysed freight data and freight flows and developed a new freight routeing map for Aberdeen City which takes into consideration the Roads Hierarchy and principle of the city being a 'destination' rather than through point whilst still providing freight with the vital access to the port areas.

Solutions

NESTRANS undertook an analysis of freight data, and consulted with freight companies, to better understand the routes being used in the city region. Coupled with this NESTRANS developed the freight routeing strategy in alignment with the Aberdeen Western Pheripheral Route and Roads Hierarchy for Aberdeen.

Citizen Participation

An online survey was undertaken with freight companies.
