Challenge / Goal

The port area is currently not easily accessible by bike. Therefore, sustainable solutions for cycling commuters will be developed to overcome land and water barriers, improve cycling conditions and encourage commuters to travel to work via bike.

Furthermore, Antwerp want to truly become a cycling-friendly city, by further improving its cycling infrastructure, and encourage people to use the bike more often.

Solutions

1. The city of Antwerp has further expanded its city bike shairng system Velo, installing stations in surrounding districts and expanding existing stations.

2. New bicycle signage has been designed and the placing on the streets will start in Q3-2019 and finish by Q4-2019.  The signage will be based on the supra-local bicycle routes (provincial bicycle routes) as determined within the mobility plan of the city of Antwerp.

3. A new concept has been launched to overcome water barriers for cyclists: the Bikebus. Cyclists cannot cross the river Scheldt in the port area. There are only tunnels for motorized transport, so cyclists have to make a major detour. With the Bikebus, cyclists can take their bike on the bus, cross the Scheldt, and continue their travel by bike afterwards.

4. Cycle-friendly traffic lights: squared green and waiting indications for cyclists are being implemented
