Challenge / Goal
NOTE: This best practice was sourced by the ENTRANCE consortium from publicly-available information.
The goal was to convert a diesel bus (MAN Lions City 12 m) to a battery-electric drive as a pilot and a MB sprinter minibus, too, thereby creating an economic and ecological alternative to the often costly and long waiting purchases of new electric buses in order to make a contribution to environmental protection by using buses which otherwise would have been decommissioned after a certain driving time.
The solution included:
- Looking for funding,
- Execution of the project activities: removal of various components such as the engine, gearbox and dynamo and selection/installation and programming of the battery packs, axle and further components with reprogramming of the control units
- Benefit for users (passengers of the public transport system and residents of the bus routes in the urban and sub-urban transport): noiseless and emission-free bus transport in the city and on rural streets
The company Autokraft GmbH, as the operator of public transport, was involved in the conversion of the bus. In this way, the requirements of a public transport company could be taken into account.
