Challenge / Goal

With more than two-thirds of the global population projected to live in cities by 2050, the design of urban environments is increasingly recognised as a critical factor influencing public health. From the placement of parks to the layout of neighbourhoods, urban planning decisions have far-reaching implications for mental and physical wellbeing. The link between urban planning and health outcomes is well-documented, however, cities struggle to quantify the impact of their interventions in health and economic terms. Despite the scientific evidence, there is a lack of easy-to-use tools that enable planners to systematically assess the impact of different urban actions on health and wellbeing, especially for mid-sized cities with limited data and capacity.

Solution

The Healthy Cities Generator (HCG) fills this gap, providing users with actionable indicators for integrating health into urban planning. Based on a state-of-the-art review of existing tools, it uses peer-reviewed research to calculate the health and impact of planning decisions, bridging the gap between theory and practice. It features an interactive user-friendly interface, supporting decision-makers to identify urban priorities that will address their health goals, review the impact of urban interventions on 30 health indicators, and see how much they could save on health each year. Piloted in Bradford, Lisbon, and Cascais, it has demonstrated flexibility across various urban contexts.

Citizen participation

We're currently developing the tool further to make it a valuable resource for citizen engagement. Through a series of stakeholder workshops held in Rotterdam, Rijeka and Valencia as part of the HORUS project, we tested an innovative methodology, involving role-play and exploratory walks, where participants assess their neighbourhood through a health lens. Learnings are being integrated into HCG, in a new module that will help city planners gather and compare citizens' perceptions of their urban environment, identify strengths and weaknesses in health and perception, and support informed decision-making with clear, visual insights.
