The DERI gives each area of Manchester City Council a score based on the expected risk of Digital Exclusion in that area.
Research from The University of Liverpool (New Digital Inclusion Taskforce launched to tackle digital divide across Greater Manchester | www.gmcvo.org.uk) suggests that up to 1 in 3 people in Manchester are in some way ‘digitally excluded’. That is unable to or have limited access to digital services or the internet. Whilst recognised as a global problem, providers of help to digitally excluded citizens need help to target scarce resources to the people most in need. The DERI seeks to provide data to enable this. The DERI (MCC Digital Exclusion Risk Index (DERI) (arcgis.com) has been been developed by the Performance, Research and Intelligence (Place Team) at Manchester City Council.
The Index displays the risk of digital exclusion across Manchester. The higher an area scores, the more at risk residents in that area may be of being digitally excluded. For example, Deansgate scores a low score of 15, where as Miles Platting and Newton Heath has a high score of 32. Each area has been given a risk score based on 14 data metrics related to the type of people living in that area and their digital activities.
The data metrics are listed on the front page of the DERI. The data can be viewed ward by ward and an overview map is colour coded to show how different areas of the city fare.
