About us

Antwerp is located in the northern part of Belgium. It is the second largest Belgian city and has Europe’s second largest port. The Antwerp urban and port areas are confronted with a complex mobility situation and major road congestion. Just like other European port cities, Antwerp has to reconcile freight and logistic transport with major flows of commuter, citizens and visitors in and around the city.

Smart City Status: The mobility objective of the city of Antwerp is to tackle this port-city challenge, improve transport infrastructure, reduce motorized road movements, promote sustainable transport modes, and keep the Antwerp region accessible and liveable.

Use Cases

Integrating The Collective Transport Network in Antwerp

In order to link the city of Antwerp with its port area, efforts are made to expand and promote the public transport network in and around the city.

Encouraging Cycling in Antwerp

The port area is currently not easily accessible by bike. Therefore, sustainable solutions for cycling commuters will be developed to overcome land and water barriers, improve cycling conditions and encourage commuters to travel to work via bike.

Optimizing Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) in Antwerp

The city of Antwerp is facing major road works and need to be kept accessible and liveable. Within the scope of PORTIS, an adapted Optimizing Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans for city and port area is implemented.

Fostering Institutional Dialogue

Antwerp wants to strengthen current cooperation platforms and initiate new cooperation platforms on a regional level. Knowledge on how to improve sustainable mobility is being increased by means of visits to other partner cities in the CIVITAS PORTIS project.

Awareness Raising Measure in Antwerp

Antwerp (PORTIS) partners are promoting sustainable mobility solutions in the city and port area. To change people's behaviour towards sustainable mobility, they have to be convinced of the benefits. This is done by informing, but also persuading and inspiring.

Connecting Transport Systems

Antwerp wants to provide locations – such as P&R’s in the city outskirts – where commuters can easily switch from one transportation mode to a more sustainable other when traveling to and from their work in the city or port area.

Developing Smart Mobility Solutions in Antwerp

In order to further encourage and facilitate the use of electric vehicles, both private and shared, a policy note was made on electric charging for citizens and employees as an answer to the increasing demand of electirc mobility and charging infrastructure.

Coordinating Freight Movements in Antwerp

Antwerp has the second largest port in Europe. It also has a strategic and central location in Europe. This leads to a lot of freight/logistic traffic in, towards and out of the port. Hence, efforts are made to encourage a modal, location, time, technology and mental shift in the logistic sector.

Event and Commuter Travel Plans

With ca. 80,000 companies and over 247,000 employees, commuter traffic, therefore, forms a big part of the movements in and around the city of Antwerp. Event and commuter plans are implemented to help companies outline sustainable mobility policies.

Developing Dynamic Traffic Management

Antwerp is a lively and vibrant city with many different traffic flows: citizens, visitors, commuters, students, freight and logistics. This also leads to many different transport modes sharing space. Measures are taken to manage this in an efficient way, to keep the city accessible and liveable.
